When people think of a realtor, they often picture someone unlocking doors, walking through pretty houses, and collecting commission checks. While those moments do happen, the reality is far more layered—and let’s be honest, way more chaotic (in the best way). Welcome to a behind-the-scenes look at what a day in the life of a realtor is really like. Spoiler alert: coffee is essential, flexibility is required, and no two days are ever the same.
7:00 AM – Wake-Up Call and Mental Prep
The day usually starts early. Before the world wakes up, I’m checking emails from overnight, scanning market updates, reviewing any new listings that match my buyers’ criteria, and mentally prepping for the day ahead. A quick workout or a few quiet minutes with coffee helps ground me—because once the phone starts ringing, it rarely stops.
8:00 AM – Client Follow-Ups and Strategy
Mornings are often for admin tasks and client communication. I’m touching base with buyers and sellers, scheduling showings, responding to inquiries, and reviewing contracts in progress. This is also when I check in with lenders, title companies, and inspectors to make sure everyone’s on the same page. Real estate isn’t just about selling—it’s about problem-solving. And the earlier I can get ahead of issues, the smoother everything goes.
10:00 AM – Property Showings and Previews
Showings are one of the most visible parts of the job, but a lot goes into them behind the scenes. I preview homes ahead of time when possible, ensuring they fit my clients’ needs. I map out the most efficient routes and prep info on schools, neighborhoods, and comparable properties. Every client is different. Some are first-time buyers, nervous and full of questions. Others are seasoned investors with spreadsheets in hand. My job is to adapt, educate, and advocate—always.
1:00 PM – Lunch on the Go (Maybe)
Lunch might be a protein bar in the car between showings or a quick stop at a local coffee shop where I can sneak in a few emails. Realtors learn to eat fast and multitask. We also learn to love Bluetooth and voice-to-text.
2:00 PM – Listing Appointments and Market Analysis
Listing a home takes more than popping a sign in the yard. I spend time with homeowners discussing strategy, staging, pricing, and marketing. I run comparative market analyses (CMAs) and walk them through the current market conditions—especially now, when things can change week to week. I’m also coordinating professional photography, creating listing descriptions, and prepping for launch day. A well-prepped listing can make all the difference in a fast-moving market.
4:00 PM – Offers, Negotiations, and Contracts
Afternoons can get intense. If offers are coming in, I’m reviewing them with clients and helping them strategize. If we're writing an offer, I’m ensuring it’s clean, competitive, and tailored to the seller’s needs. Negotiations can be delicate. Emotions run high, and it’s my job to keep things grounded, focused, and fair. That means staying cool under pressure and knowing when to push—or when to pivot.
6:00 PM – Evening Showings or Open Houses
Many clients work 9-to-5, which means I work 5-to-9. Evening showings are common, and open houses often fall on evenings or weekends. This is where relationships are built—walking through homes, dreaming about possibilities, answering questions, and helping people visualize their next chapter.
9:00 PM – Wrap-Up and Wind Down
By the end of the day, I’m circling back with clients, updating notes, and planning for tomorrow. I might be uploading documents, checking in with other agents, or catching up on market news. And yes, I’m probably scrolling listings in bed. Occupational hazard.
Why I Love It
Being a realtor is unpredictable, challenging, and—honestly—exhausting at times. But it’s also incredibly rewarding. Helping someone buy their first home, sell a property they've outgrown, or relocate for a fresh start—that never gets old. Real estate isn’t just a job. It’s a calling, a hustle, a lifestyle. And even on the busiest days, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
